In our best competition yet we’ve managed to twist ASDA’s arm to offer one of their new Student Shopper Cards and load it with £500 - easily enough to stock up your storecupboard and keep you in fresh food for a term.

Asda has launched the scheme to help the 500,000* cash-strapped freshers estimated to be starting university this year, 87%** of whom are moving away from home for the first time. (Of course, the scheme applies to existing students too - estimated to total 1.3m this year***)

The scheme works by giving parents a shopper card, which they keep and add funds to at their local Asda or online. This card is linked to the student’s own shopper card, which they keep to pay for their groceries in any Asda store across the UK as they would with a regular Asda gift-card. The balance of both cards is automatically updated once funds are paid by the parent onto the card or deducted when the student makes purchases in store. (Note: parents will be able to see the transaction dates, location and amounts that you’re spending so don’t think you can blow the lot on a flat screen telly.)

Parents and students can apply for the card online in the gift voucher section of the ASDA website or in their local store. Registering the card means it can’t be used by anyone else and also gains you access to exclusive promotions, offers and competitions.

To win the card just answer the following ridiculously easy question:

How many freshers are estimated to be starting university this year? (If you’ve been paying attention so far this should be a doddle . . .)

Mail your answer to [email protected] with ASDA Student Shopper Card Comp in the subject line, giving your name, address and the university at which you’re studying.

Terms & Conditions.
  • This competition is open to students of 18 or over who are studying in the UK
  • Only one entry per person (a real human being will actually check this out, not a robot!)
  • The closing date for the competition is 11.59pm GMT on Friday October 8th.
